about

"Royal Street Blues" is the first single and title track off of the latest release by Tyler Westcott. The full album drops April 25th.

“Royal Street Blues” features three Westcott originals: the nostalgia soaked “Back in the Day”, the brooding topical juxtaposition of “Mardi Gras In Ukraine”, & busking anthem and title track “Royal Street Blues”. All other tracks were written by Louisiana born musicians. Westcott offers renditions of Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, Danny Barker, as well as a swamp pop song and Cajun tune. Westcott gathered an impressive group of locals to perform. The songs are filled with rolling piano, fiddle, washboard, tenor banjo and the classic New Orleans horn trio sound of clarinet, trombone and trumpet.
With the knowledgeable Big Jon Atkinson behind the console and the band all in one room recording live to tape the record has a warm and fuzzy beautiful old timey sound. 11 tracks were cut in two days using vintage RCA ribbon microphones some of which were used by the likes of Nat King Cole and others.
“Royal Street Blues” is a personal ode to the unique culture of New Orleans and Louisiana. It taps into the spirit of the early days of Jazz. It’s a refreshing perspective on an ancient art form that feels memorable and new.”

lyrics

Wake up early wipe the sleep from my eyes
Splash some water on my face
Saddle up the bike between my thighs
Movin' slow at my own pace
Hungover flying down St. Claude
If I hit a pothole that’s between me and god
Say hey to the boys holding down the spot
Looking a little haggard with their eyes all bloodshot

Chorus:
Sun is shining & the skies are clear
Let’s have some fun while we’re here
Can’t stop me once my banjo's strung
Singin' at the top of my lungs
We ain’t playin nothin but 100 year old songs
I got the Royal Street blues all day long

All the pretty ladies pass by this way
Through the quarter they sashay
I’ve got a headache sitting on a milk crate
I’ve been drinking but I have not ate
Walk the bucket up and down the street
Swing dancers with happy feet
looks like we're starting to draw a crowd
I’m strumming these strings real loud

The boys are whining
And I’m Grinning ear to ear
My belly I'm lining with another beer
Can’t stop stop me once my guitars strung
Singing at the top of our lungs
We ain't playing nothing but jugband songs
Got the Royal Street Blues all day long

Smells and melody waft on by
Faint sound of calliopes cry
Got to get down to the river to have a bite
Watch the ships pass by and get our heads right
Made enough for po-boys & beer
This is what all I’ve wanted for many years
We make our way over to Frenchmen street
Dance until the break of day to mambo beat

Yes sir I know what it means
To miss the the land of dreams
It’s a feeling on the tip of your tongue
I’m leavin' tomorrow but the night is young
Let’s burn the midnight oil til dawn
I’ve got the Royal Street Blues all night long
